SURVIVAL WITHOUT RENT is a short archival documentary told with news clips, home videos, and oral histories. It traces the history of the squatters’ movement on the Lower East Side, starting with the 1970s fiscal crisis in New York that created a supply of abandoned city-owned properties and ending in 1995 with a militarized eviction of several squats.

Dirty Days in Fun City

DIRTY DAYS IN FUN CITY tells the forgotten history of the 1968 New York sanitation strike and its ties to one in Memphis that same year, where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Through explorations of labor and waste, the film examines what and who society deems valuable or disposable. This project is currently in production.

WEST SIDE FAMILIA follows the story of a Puerto Rican-led biker gang and community care group from the ‘70s that’s grappling with the preservation of their public traditions and cultural identity in the hyper-gentrified neighborhood of Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The film will air on PBS in 2026.

When neighborhood friends from Church Hill in Richmond, VA launch their music careers as teens in the face of Jim Crow, segregation in the music industry, and the early civil rights movement, they emerge as unsung pioneers, innovators, and legends in jazz, funk, and soul. As originators, their music has collectively been sampled thousands of times, transforming the industry and the careers of some of the biggest-selling artists globally. Now as elders, urgency has set in to preserve their legacies, and the memory of their hometown neighborhood, threatened by erasure due to urban decay and gentrification. This project is currently in production.

SOUND BARRIER is a documentary podcast about artists who break barriers in music and culture. Season 1 is about Sylvester— a musician who is perhaps even more relevant today than in the 70s and 80s. Imagine: before Elton John was out of the closet, before androgynous performers of color like Prince were in the mainstream, there was an openly gay Black man who dressed in drag. Sound Barrier delves deep into his music and his life, showing him in all his genre and gender-bending glory.
